Following on from our series of highly successful E-safety days which were aimed at children in Key Stage 2 and 3, Central Manchester City Learning Centre has now organised an

E-safety conference aimed at staff which will support the E-safety agenda within your school.

When?

The Central Manchester CLC E-safety Conference will run from 9.30am - 3.30pm on Thursday 11^th February 2010. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and the conference is free to attend.

Who is it aimed at?

The conference is aimed at Head teachers, ICT co-ordinators, Child Protection Officers and anyone concerned with the E-safety agenda within your school

Why is E-safety important?

There are many benefits of the computer age and one of these is that children are becoming smarter. They are growing up computer literate and will have that as a huge advantage. Computer literacy is becoming an essential job qualification and feeling comfortable with computers will put them a step ahead. The internet provides a vast library of information which children can access quickly and easily. The information is in a variety of formats – games, information, flash sites – which makes it suitable and appealing to most children. The Internet is a daily part of modern educational life, along with other communications technologies. Our young people are voracious consumers of information and need the skills and understanding to navigate safely and effectively through life. As professionals working with young people and technology, this is where we can make a difference.

By attending our conference you will access the latest training, information and resources in current education E-safety thinking. You will receive CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) training and resources to use with young people, advice and guidance on writing and updating your Acceptable Use Policy and free E-safety resources produced by the young people of Manchester. You will also have the opportunity to hear guest speakers from Manchester Healthy Schools and Greater Manchester Police.

Important Information: To attend this course, you must bring a current CRB check to the conference to access the CEOP training.

Here at the CLC we are continuing to help introduce Honeycomb to local primary schools and will be running two training sessions for staff this week.

Honeycomb allows students to add various content to their own web page, and share this with teachers and fellow students, thereby promoting collaberative learning. This could include text, videos or blogs and all of the content can be edited quickly and easily.

The CLC will be running the Digital Video Unit of the Digital Creator Course for Year 9 students from Trinity High School over the half term holiday. In this unit students will learn all about film making techniques and will make their own short film as part of their coursework.

Digital Creator from the British Computing Society is an exciting new award designed to meet the needs of people who want to make the most of digital media devices and computers. Further information is available from the BCS website: http://www.bcs.org/server.php?show=nav.8945

The CLCs in the area are proud to be host to training for schools in the area. The latest involves training for the Honeycomb system and the related Vye laptops. Primary schools can get involved and sign up. After completing the training day, which are taking place at the four CLCs in Manchester throughout June and July, the Primary Schools are issued with a set of Vye netbooks running wireless internet and the Honeycomb system for the Primary School children to use.
